Portrait HG

I have just moved to Toulouse, where I now teach Commonwealth studies in the English Department of Toulouse 2.
While waiting to post new pages from Toulouse, I have kept this reduced versionof my personal web pages, for the use of students and  fellow-researchers.

Research

My theoretical field is the history and communication of ideas. I am interested in the connections between poetry and politics : what can be communicated in a given literary form (poetry) in a given geopolitical context (the British Empire and Commonwealth). The broad theme of  the research that I direct is the history and the various forms of communication of the idea of Greater Britain, from Charles Dilke's invention of the idea, in 1868, to the end of Empire denounced by Philip Larkin in 1968.

Within that broad scope, the period in which I myself specialize is the 1940s.
