Though the war in South Africa generated a prodigious amount of verse, it is surprisingly difficult to get hold of. The best, indeed the only, book-length critical treatment is M. Van Wyk Smith's Drummer Hodge. The Poetry of the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902, published in Oxford in 1978, has long been out of print. This ongoing anthology is my modest attempt to improve the situation.
