Le cours a pour
objet d'analyser la construction de la société
américaine à travers les modes et modalités
d'écriture de son histoire (l'historiographie est en effet
""l'histoire de l'histoire").
Nous travaillerons simultanément sur
des questions de fond à partir du livre d'Antoine Prost, Douze
leçons sur l'histoire
(Seuil, coll. Points), que vous devrez acquérir et sur la
naissance aux Etats-Unis de l'histoire "professionnelle", vers le
dernier quart du
XIXème siècle et ses développements jusqu'aux
années 1950-60.
Les ressources
pour votre approfondissement sont :
- Une bonne histoire des Etats-Unis. Je conseille
Maldwyn Jones, The
Limits of Liberty (Oxford), mais d'autres sont possibles.
- Les deux ouvrages suivants dont l'usage est chaudement
recommandé :
- Fohlen, Claude, Jean Heffer et François Weil, Canada et Etats-Unis depuis 1770
(Paris : PUF, 1997).
- Heffer, Jean et François Weil, Chantiers d'histoire américaine
(Paris : Belin, 1994).
Examen :
- [écrit] Examen terminal : commentaire
d'un extrait de livre d'un historien (préface, passage
significatif, etc.) qui fait apparaître le mode d'écriture
de l'histoire et la méthode.

- 15 septembre : Introduction to the study of history
(historiography). What
is "history".
- 29 septembre :
- Read Bernard Bailyn on the meaning of the word "history"
- Read and be ready to discuss the content of the 4 pages :
the first page is general (why & where), the other three pages are
historiographical discussions of specific topics / moment in
American history : Why
and where historians disagree
- 6 octobre :
- Texts to be studied & discussed in class: Pre-professional history.
Read them carefully and note the differences in how "historical" events
are approached. Who were they written for? & by whom? What kind of
narrative strategy do they use?
- Listen (whenever you have the time) to this program
on uchronia. (counterfactual history)
- 13 octobre : lecture class. Text to be studied: How Historians Play God.
- 20 octobre : Text to be
studied: F. J. Turner, "The
Significance of the Frontier in American History".
- 27 octobre:
- End of F. J.Turner. Be ready to present the main elements
of this text in a structured manner (=> outline)
- Read (& be ready to present) Antoine Prost, chap. 3
& 4. Read Fabrice à Waterloo.
- 10 novembre : Text to be studied: Charles Beard, An Economic Interpretation of The American
Constitution. Part 1: Introduction
to the 1935 edition. Part 2: Chapter 1.
- 17 novembre :
- End of Beard's text. Be ready to present the main
elements of this text in a structured manner (=> outline)
- Read (& be ready to present) Antoine Prost, chap. 6
& 8. Discussion in class.
