M1  — HISTORIOGRAPHIE DES ETATS-UNIS

Le cours a pour objet d'analyser la construction d'une société américaine à travers les modes et modalités d'écriture de son histoire (l'historiographie est en effet l'histoire de l'histoire). Nous travaillerons simultanément sur des questions de fond à partir du livre d'Antoine Prost, Douze leçons sur l'histoire (Seuil, coll. Points), que vous devrez acquérir et sur la naissance de l'histoire "professionnelle", vers le dernier quart du XIXème siècle et ses développements jusqu'aux années 1950.


Les ressources pour votre approfondissement sont :
  • Une bonne histoire des Etats-Unis. Je conseille Maldwyn Jones, The Limits of Liberty (Oxford), mais d'autres sont possibles.
  • Les deux ouvrages suivants dont l'usage est chaudement recommandé :
    • Fohlen, Claude, Jean Heffer et François Weil, Canada et Etats-Unis depuis 1770 (Paris : PUF, 1997).
    • Heffer, Jean et François Weil, Chantiers d'histoire américaine (Paris : Belin, 1994).
  • Les ouvrages d'appoint suivants :
    • Foner, Eric (ed.), The New American History (Philadelphia : Temple University Press, 1990).
Examen :
  • [écrit] Examen terminal : commentaire d'un extrait de livre d'un historien (préface, passage significatif, etc.) qui fait apparaître le mode d'écriture de l'histoire et la méthode.
